Search Popular NP Databases

Access Medicine

Access Medicine provides a variety of resources needed to excel in basic science studies. In addition, it provides instant access to videos, self-assessment and leading medical textbooks that facilitate decision-making at the point-of-care.

Log in

To log in to Access Medicine, use the database links on the library homepage or select the link below. If prompted to log in, you will use the same login information you use for your classes (D# and password).

Search

As highlighted in the image below, you can search Access Medicine in the following ways:

  • Enter your keyword(s) for your topic in the search box at the top of the page. The image below demonstrates a search for asthma management
  • Use the navigation drop-down menus above the search box at the top of the page.
  • Use the left and right arrows to browse the available books in the book carousel under the search box.

Create an Account

You can create an account in Access Medicine, which will allow you to make use of the study tools available. To create your account, select the My Profile menu in the upper right-hand corner and select Sign in or Create a Free Access Profile as shown in the image below.

Next, select Create a Free Access Profile as shown in the image below.

Note! It may take a bit of time for your account to be created so if you are not able to access the study tools immediately, wait for a bit and try again. You must also log into your account via the institutional login to Access Medicine every 90 days to keep your profile active.

Use the Study Tools

After you create an account, you can use the study tools. To access the quizzes and flashcards, select Study Tools from the top navigation menu and Review Questions, as shown in the image below.

As highlighted in the image below, you can select a multiple-choice quiz under Review Questions or Flashcards in the left-hand navigation menu.

CINAHL with Full Text

The CINAHL database includes nursing and allied health literature that can be helpful for completing your assignments.

Log in

To log in to CINAHL, use the database links on the library homepage or select the link below. If prompted to log in, you will use the same login information you use for your classes (D# and password).

Search

Enter your keywords for your topic in the search box(es) at the top of the page. The image below shows a search for heart disease AND statins with heart disease in the first box, AND selected from the drop-down menu and statins in the second search box.

You can also use the Limit Your Results section underneath the search boxes to help narrow your search. As shown in the image below, common filters include:

  • Full Text (should be automatically checked)
  • English Language
  • Research Articles
  • Published Date

Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Library includes the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) and Cochrane Clinical Answers.  

Log in 

To log in to the Cochrane Library, use the database links on the library homepage or select the link below. If prompted to log in, you will use the same login information you use for your classes (D# and password).

Search

Enter your keyword(s) for your topic in the search box in the top right corner of the page, and select the magnifying glass icon to search. Your results will be separated by tabs for each database in the Cochrane Library:

  • Cochrane Reviews report Cochrane systematic reviews related to your topic. This is often the information that is most of interest to students.  
  • Cochrane Protocols provide protocols related to systematic reviews.
  • Trials has citations for clinical trials on your topic from both journals and other sources like ClinicalTrials.gov. You will need to search for these sources outside of Cochrane to see if you can get full text access. 
  • Clinical Answers provide information on your topic where a short clinical question is asked and answered using information from systematic reviews in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.  

You can use the filters to the left of the results to refine your search. The image below shows the results page for a search of heart disease and highlights the Filter Your Results section to the left of the results.

DSM-5 Library

The DSM Library provides you with access to the most current version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the DSM-5-TR. In addition, you can access the original DSM-5 Manual and several other books related to the DSM-5.  

Log in

To log in to the DSM Library, use the database links on the library homepage or select the link below. If prompted to log in, you will use the same login information you use for your classes (D# and password).

Search 

Under the Discover DSM Titles section, you will see the DSM-5 titles available to you. Select the link for the book that you are interested in and use the table of contents to skip to the chapter that has the information you need.

OVID Databases

You have several databases, eBooks and eJournals you can search via our OVID subscription that may be of interest.

Log in

To log in to the OVID databases, use the database links on the library homepage or select the link below. If prompted to log in, you will use the same login information you use for your classes (D# and password).

Search

  1. Use the Select Resource(s) to search box in the middle of the page to select individual or All Resources (preferred) to search.
  2. After you choose, select continue, as shown in the image below.

  2. To apply filters, select the arrow to the right of Limits to expand the column, as shown in the image below.
