Information Literacy

Introduction

In February, 2016, the American Library Association adopted the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.

The frames include: 

  • Authority is Constructed and Contextual
  • Information Creation as a Process
  • Information has Value
  • Research as Inquiry
  • Scholarship as Conversation
  • Searching as Strategic Exploration. 

According to the American Library Association (ALA, 1989), information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use [that information] effectively" (para. 3). Academic success, professional development, and even good citizenship have always been founded on the use of these literacy skills -- but they are critical to survival in the 21st century.
